Roelof Temmingh was born in Amsterdam, and moved to South Africa when his family emigrated there in 1958. He obtained his BMus, BA and MMus at the University of Cape Town between 1965 and 1970, thereafter studied composition in Germany, and was appointed to teach at the University of Stellenbosch in 1973. In 1976, he obtained a PhD in Musicology and in 1979 he studied computer music at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. Temmingh has established himself as one of the leading composers in South Africa. Initially he aroused some controversy with a number of experimental works.

From circa 1985 onwards, these tendencies became less notable, as may be observed in his three operas: Enoch Prophet of God (premiered in Cape Town in 1995), Sacred Bones (Cape Town 1997) and Buchuland (Pretoria 1998). Since 1988 he has won all the major composition competitions in South Africa, including the Helgaard Steyn Award for the best South African work int he years 1986-1990 (for his Three Sonnets for string orchestra). Temmingh has worked in all genres, including electronic music. Temmingh's music has been performed widely both at home and abroad, across Europe and North America.
